Young Asian Policymakers Learn IMF-style Economic Surveillance at a Summer Workshop
September 10, 2020, Tokyo, Japan - In a virtual learning setting, young Asian policymakers today debated pros and cons of policy recommendations for Maldives’ economy hit by the pandemic after learning about IMF macroeconomic analysis tools with peers at a summer workshop.
The three-day workshop was offered by the IMF Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific for 26 policymakers from 12 Asian countries under the Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (#JISPA), most of whom are entering the second year of their chosen graduate programs in Japan. Current and former IMF economists offered lectures and guided discussions.
The workshop started in 2018 to provide an opportunity to better understand the IMF’s economic surveillance while networking with peer scholars who study at different Japanese universities. JISPA has provided more than 800 scholarships for junior officials across Asia since its start in 1993.
