Press Release: IMF Names Heads of Monetary and Exchange Affairs Department, Fund Office at UN

Michel Camdessus, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has appointed Manuel Guitián as Director of the IMF's Monetary and Exchange Affairs Department, effective April 3, 1995. Mr. Guitián, a national of Spain, succeeds Mr. J.B. Zulu, who becomes Director of the IMF Office at the U.N. and Special Representative to the United Nations. The appointment of Mr. Zulu, a national of Zambia, also became effective April 3.

Mr. Guitián, 56, joined the IMF in 1970 as an economist and has held a number of positions in the former European Department, the former Exchange and Trade Relations Department and the former Central Banking Department. He has been Associate Director of the Monetary and Exchange Affairs Department since 1991. Mr. Guitián has been a Guest Scholar at the Brookings Institution. Before joining the IMF, Mr. Guitián taught in Spain at the universities of Santiago and Madrid. He holds a degree in law from the University of Santiago, and degrees in economics from the University of Madrid; he also holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago.

Mr. Zulu, 60, joined the IMF in 1976 as Deputy Director of the African Department and has served as Director of the African and former Central Banking Departments. Before joining the IMF, Mr. Zulu was Advisor to an Executive Director of the IMF from 1971 to 1974 and was an Alternate Executive Director of the IMF from 1974 to 1976. From 1967 to 1970, he was Governor of the Bank of Zambia and, in 1970-71, served as Special Assistant to the President of Zambia. Mr. Zulu has a Ph.D. degree in economics from the University of Colorado.
