News Brief: IMF Statement on Argentina
August 14, 1996
P. R. Narvekar, Acting Managing Director of the International Monetary
Fund (IMF), today issued the following statement:
"The Argentine authorities have announced an important package of
measures aimed at strengthening tax collections and reducing the fiscal
deficit; the package also includes measures designed to foster employment
creation and assist low income groups. The proposed measures provide
renewed and welcome proof of the authorities' determination to strengthen
the Convertibility Plan and build upon the major achievements made under
the plan. An IMF team will visit Buenos Aires in coming days to continue
our ongoing dialogue with the Argentine authorities."
