The symposium will feature the release of new IMF work on “Cross-cutting Themes in Employment Experiences during the Crisis”. The labor market experiences of the following countries receive detailed treatment in the paper: Germany, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, and Sweden. The overall global unemployment crisis and what can be done to address it will also be discussed.

Two papers will be presented at the symposium. Athanasios Vamvakidis will present on “Cross-Cutting Themes in Employment Experiences During the Crisis,” and Prakash Loungani will present on “Human Cost of Recessions: Assessing It, Reducing It.” John Schmitt, an economist who has consulted for the International Labour Organization and AFL-CIO, will be the discussant.
