Latin America is in the midst of "a substantial if silent transformation" writes Javier Santiso in his book Latin America's Political Economy of the Possible: Beyond Good Revolutionaries and Free-Marketeers (MIT Press, 2006): The region's "political economy has become eminently pragmatic."
Development strategies in some countries in the region, says Santiso, are now "anchored externally by treaties and trade agreements and internally by strong fiscal and monetary institutions and policies."
Will pragmatism prove more contagious than populism? Join us for a discussion featuring IMF Deputy Managing Director Agustín Carstens, Javier Santiso, and other experts.
