Nigel Chalk is Director of the IMF’s Western Hemisphere Department. He previously served as Deputy Director in the same department and as mission chief for the United States, leading twelve consecutive Article IV consultations.
During his time in WHD, he has overseen surveillance and lending operations for countries including Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Canada, among others. Prior to this, he was Managing Director and Head of Non-Japan Asia Research at Barclays in Singapore. He has also served as Deputy Director in the IMF’s Asia and Pacific Department, including as mission chief for China, and earlier worked on a range of emerging market economies across several IMF departments.
He holds a B.A. from the University of Liverpool, an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles.
