Course Description

This course covers a broad range of macroeconomic issues. The course analyzes the four main macroeconomic sectors (real, fiscal, external, and monetary) and their interlinkages including macro-fiscal and macro-financial aspects, and how to diagnose macroeconomic imbalances and financial stability risks. The course will at all times relate the theoretical material to the Indian context and help participants develop a deeper understanding of India's present economic opportunities and challenges.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Analyze potential output and calculate output gaps and diagnose the outlook for the Indian economy.
  • Assess the stance of current fiscal, monetary and exchange rate, and financial policies.
  • Assess macro-financial linkages and understand some aspects of financial regulation and macro prudential policies.
  • Assess the medium-term prospects of the economy, especially the sustainability of public and external debt, and identify impediments to long-term growth.
  • Identify possible external and internal economic risks and vulnerabilities to economic growth and identify policies to address them.
