BRADLEY LANGUAGE: EnglishESTABLISHMENT AND FUNCTIONSAt the initiative of a number of international organizations and the authorities of Austria, the Joint Vienna Institute (JVI) was set up to provide training to support and supplement the national efforts of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the countries formerly republics of the USSR, and other countries, in their transition from centrally-planned to market-based economies. To this end, the Institute offers courses in the areas of economic and financial management and reform, banking supervision and regulation, statistical methodology and related areas, primarily to public officials, with due regard to the role of the private sector. The Institute started providing courses under interim arrangements in September 1992. The Agreement for the establishment of the JVI came into force on August 19, 1994, thereby establishing the JVI as a new international organization. COMPOSITIONSix Parties to the Agreement: the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and the World Trade Organization (WTO). STRUCTUREThe Executive Board is responsible for determining the Institute's policies and conducting its business. It is composed of representatives appointed by each Party to the Agreement. The Director is chief of the operating staff of the Institute, and, under the direction of the Executive Board, conducts the ordinary business of the Institute. UPDATED: December 2003
