ESTABLISHMENT AND FUNCTIONS

The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) was established in September 1939 in Washington, DC, in accordance with a resolution of the International Cotton Meeting of 12 principal cotton exporting countries. The first meeting was held in Washington, DC in October 1940. The Committee is an association of governments having an interest in the production, export, import, and consumption of cotton, designated to promote cooperation in the solution of cotton problems, particularly those of international scope and significance. Its functions are to observe and keep in close touch with developments affecting the world cotton situation; collect and disseminate complete, authentic, and timely statistics on world cotton production, trade, consumption, stocks and prices; suggest, as and when advisable, to member governments any measures considered suitable and practicable for the achievement of ultimate international collaboration. ICAC is a Designated International Commodity Body (ICB) under the terms of the Common Fund for Commodities. Membership is open to all members of the United Nations or the Food and Agriculture Organization and to other governments having a substantial interest in cotton.

COMPOSITION

43 member countries: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, China (Taiwan), Colombia, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Islamic Republic of Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mali, Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Paraguay, Philippines, Poland, Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain, Sudan, Switzerland, Syrian Arab Republic, Tanzania, Togo, Turkey, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, Uzbekistan, Zimbabwe.

STRUCTURE

Annual plenary meetings are attended by representatives of member countries and observers from other governments, international organizations and private sector. There is a Standing Committee which meets in Washington, DC in the interim between plenary meetings.
