(vacant) LANGUAGES: Portuguese, SpanishESTABLISHMENT AND FUNCTIONSThe Financial Fund for the Development of the River Plate Basin (FONPLATA) was created in accordance with the provisions of the River Plate Treaty of 1969 for the development and integration of the subregion. The Articles of Agreement were signed on June 12, 1974 and became effective on October 14, 1976. FONPLATA's objective is the financing, within the terms of Article 1 of the River Plate Treaty, studies, projects, programs and tasks that promote the harmonic development and physical integration of the River Plate, assigning for such effect their own financial resources and those obtained from other financial sources. The authorized capital of FONPLATA is US$308 million, of which 87.01 percent is paid-in and 12.99 percent is callable. Paid-up capital, as of December 31, 2000, was US$268 million. From the beginning of the activities of FONPLATA until December 31, 2001, 54 loans have been approved, for the amount of US$383.3 million. COMPOSITION5 member countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay STRUCTUREThe Board of Governors is composed of one Governor and one Alternate Governor for each member country, usually a Minister and/or Central Bank Governor. The Board meets annually on the same occasion as the Chancellors of the Plata Basin, and on other occasions as necessary. The Executive Board of Directors is composed of five Executive Directors and five Alternates appointed by their respective Governors with no defined term of office. The chairmanship is exercised, for a one-year term, based on an alphabetical rotation among member countries.
