IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde Appoints Tobias Adrian as Financial Counsellor and Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department

  • Mr. Adrian brings extensive operational and policy experience from a wide range of roles at the New York Fed, where he was most recently Senior Vice President and Associate Director of Research
  • A German-U.S. dual national, Mr. Adrian holds a Ph.D. from MIT and a MSc from the London School of Economics, as well as postgraduate degrees from Goethe University in Frankfurt and Dauphine University in Paris.
  • Mr. Adrian will start on January 3, 2017, replacing Jose Viñals who resigned in July

Ms. Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), today announced her intention to appoint Tobias Adrian as Financial Counsellor and Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department. He succeeds José Viñals, who announced his departure from the IMF in July.

“Mr. Adrian has extensive experience in assessing and addressing capital markets issues and in developing monetary and financial stability policies at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York,” Ms Lagarde said. “He is internationally highly regarded for his insightful analytical work, and has published widely, including on asset pricing and capital markets, monetary policy, and financial sector issues. I believe that his range of talents and experience makes him ideally suited to lead the Fund’s monetary, capital market and financial sector work at this time.”

Mr. Adrian has most recently served as Senior Vice President and Associate Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where he has worked in a variety of roles since 2003. He brings with him wide experience in capital markets. His research in the field has encompassed asset pricing, financial intermediation, and the aggregate macroeconomic implications of capital market developments. He has made important contributions to the New York Fed’s financial stability policy and its monetary policy briefings. Prior to joining the New York Fed, he held positions at the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, MA, and at the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels.

A German-U.S. dual national, Mr. Adrian holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a MSc from the London School of Economics, as well as postgraduate degrees from Goethe University in Frankfurt and Dauphine University in Paris. He has taught at MIT, Princeton University, and New York University.

His appointment is effective January 3, 2017.
