2022 Leadership Message

As we have emerged from the pandemic, climate change is a major threat to long-term growth and prosperity. Recognizing this, the Fund has expanded its work on climate change and support to member countries in adopting and implementing mitigation and adaptation policies. The Fund is also taking steps to advance its operational environmental sustainability goals.

In 2021, an Environmental Sustainability Council (ESC) was established as a significant step forward in the effort to further reduce the operational impact of the Fund's operations. The Council is advising and providing guidance to Fund management on the operational environmental issues facing the organization and is working towards the establishment of milestones and targets to better measure progress.

Moving into the new year, the Fund is committed to continue to improve existing practices and identify new ways to reduce energy consumption. We are proud of the achievements to date and will continue to work collaboratively to accomplish even better results in the future.

2022 change relative to 2019: 36.1%

After a sharp reduction in emissions in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fund's total emissions reached 64 percent of pre-pandemic levels in 2022 as operations fully returned to normal during the second half of the year. 2023 is likely to see a further increase in emissions as a result of the full year effect of return to normal operations.
