Youth in Japan Tries Out IMF-style Economic Surveillance at Virtual Workshop
July 14, 2020, Tokyo, Japan – About 20 students attending university in Japan completed last night a week-long online workshop on IMF-style economic surveillance after conducting final group presentations.
The 9th Macroeconomist Training Program, offered by the IMF Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, was conducted virtually for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eighteen students and one young professional joined the workshop this time and attended nightly online lectures. On the last day, the participants were divided into four groups and made group presentations on the pros and cons of the Maldives' economic policies that respond to the pandemic.
The program was initiated in 2017 to reach out to the youth and provide an opportunity to learn how the IMF conducts bilateral economic surveillance at an overnight workshop. The regional office has to date offered nine workshops to a total of 197 students and young professionals from 35 countries.
